Why your business needs a Digital Plan

If your business does not have a digital strategy then how do you know where you’re heading and what you’re trying to achieve?

In this post we identify 5 problems that in our experience will effect the operation of your business if you do not have a clear Digital Plan.

Your business has no focus

We find that businesses with a digital plan do not also have a set of business goals for what they want to achieve in terms of customer development or business growth and if you do not have these business have goals you likely do not have enough resources to reach the goals and you then do not evaluate whether you’re achieving those goals.

Do you really know your customers at all?

There can be no doubt that digital is one of the most measurable marketing tools ever.  However alot of the common statistical programs in use today will only tell you volume, not demographics and touchpoints – so how do you identify areas you can improve unless you know them?

Your business is not integrated

We often find if a business does have some kind of digital activity this is not focused on the business its run by ‘John who knows facebook’ at the same time as being a salesperson or the managers PA as she has a few spare hours a week.  This should be integrated with your business so everyone buys into the digital plan and can play their part in identifying opportunities for the business to grow online.

You are loosing out to competitors who do have a clear digital plan

Pretty much every business we work with has some form of statistical monitoring of enquiry traffic and even just traffic – Facebook insights??.  Unfortunately for alot of business this is as far as they go, they do not review and then act on the results of that review so they can decide where to implement the key aspects of the business marketing like email marketing and social media marketing.

Your marketing is not cost effective

Digital in 2016 has to be one of the most cost effective ways for any business to reach its target market, the only issue the growing business we work with come across is the lack of specific specialist digital skills which make it difficult for the business to respond effectively and this is where we come in as your outsourced digital partner.

So there you have it, five clear issued that will be effecting your business if you do not have a clear Digital Plan – if you are one of those businesses why not get in touch now, through the website here OR call us on 01392 241653 for a no obligation chat…

Getting your ecommerce site ready for Christmas

As we head into the busiest quarter for most ecommerce sites, you as a site owner you need to ask yourself some really pertinent questions as there is simply no point in sending traffic to a less-than-optimised website or product listing. So before you do anything else then take a good look at your website and product listings and ask yourself the following question: Would I buy from this site?

You need to be hard and honest and this is where an experienced outside team can help, asking such things like;

is your design professional enough for your business image?

do your product pages look dated?

does the copy need updating, are you actually selling each and every product?

What about your photos, if they were taken on a mobile phone – this is not good enough these days.

Does your site have any additional costs that you aren’t honest and open about?

Do you have a significant drop off at checkout?

If the answer is yes to any of these direct questions your site will be loosing business, maybe more than you are actually winning so why not take the opportunity now to get your site working as it should.  Don’t forget these days this  can include simply collecting data on a brochure download or getting new likes on your Facebook page.

The simple truth is that you need to make it easy for any potential (and returning) customer to do business with you, if you don’t they may go elsewhere.

Gleave Media are experienced ecommerce consultants and can help get your business plans sorted in time for Christmas and beyond, please get in touch here

How to get the best out of your Email Marketing

Promoting your business by email marketing is a powerful form of direct marketing, you can communicate quickly, effectively and very cost effectively to all your groups of customers and prospects at a time of your choosing.

Any email marketing needs to be planned with real care so it can be interesting and most of all relevant to your recipients, so here are our top tips to get the best out of your email marketing campaigns.

1. Targeting
The whole point of email marketing is to target the right people so your message can go direct to a user who is interested in what you are offering. You need to bear in mind that unsolicited emails or spam is illegal and server side software often filters these out so they are wasted email anyway. A user will usually always delete an email that is unsolicited and irrelevant but an email to a customer or prospect who has agreed to receive your message is far more valuable to you as a business.

2. Keep it relevant
A number of companies have large email databases of customers and prospects so it is worth analysing what you know about this list, how recent is the data for example? Can you sort the data into categories – you do this so you can ensure you send a relevant email to the relevant category.

3. Opt in for your emails
We have already said that it is illegal to send unsolicited emails anybody receiving junk email, spam or stuff they didn’t ask for is not going to wax lyrically about you and your business, so why not check or ask every now and then if they are happy to still receive your email? Of course ensure your site has the option to sign any user up – this one for example you can sign up on the side menu OR at the bottom of this post, please do!

4. Give people a reason to sign up
Following on from the last point, sign up to our email list and we will just update you with all that is relevant in Email Marketing, Social Media and Online for your business. For your business an incentive may well be a special discount, you let people know first on email maybe or something exclusive just to this email list. When you make offers available on an exclusive basis you will see viewing and click through rates higher than normal straight ‘brochure emails’.

5. Growing your email lists
If you run regular email campaign then don’t miss opportunities to add new people to your list when you have new marketing material, ask people if its ok to send them an email, if you create content for your website then add an email sign up on the post (as is on this one). Your website is one of the most powerful (and easy) ways to collect data so use it and remember to mention the benefits or reasons to signup up to your email list.

6. Creating the email newsletter
You need to use a good strong and flexible email marketing system that allows professional looking email to be created. We use our own system mailPDQ and you can find out more on the link.

This email marketing system allows easy customization, targeting of category groups and scheduling of emails amongst others, if you want a free demo please let us know.

When creating the email these are three key points to bear in mind:

a) make it interesting and relevant
b) customize the message for the audience
c) include the opportunity to record clicks through to the content on your website

Also make sure the business phone number is available if possible so people have a number of ways to contact you. Finally the opportunity unsubscribe needs to be on every email, mailPDQ has this as default so you cannot send any future email again to anyone who has unsubscribed.

7. Make it engaging
Anyone will only read something and act on an email that interests them so keep yours engaging by tailoring it to your audience. You could even even split test your email to see which one works best. So how do you make your email engaging?

a) get the best subject line that attracts attention, many readers will decide whether to read just by the subject line, so put some thought into and dont go wild and wacky as this subject line can still get picked up by spam filters – no the greatest ever etc etc…
b) get to the point, waffle is terrible in conversation so why put it in your email newsletter?
c) offer benefits, we have mentioned earlier about special benefits to email subscribers, what can you offer?
d) how often do you send? only send when you have something interesting and relevant.

8. Monitor and follow up
All email newsletters/campaigns should be monitored and follow up else how will you improve next time? You also monitor to make sure your time spent creating everything is worhtwhile so make sure you record views and click throughs, maybe also the best groups of data that respond to the best message? This way you can improve the next email and make it even more engaging.

So here you have it, our top 8 tips to get the best out of your email marketing, to find out more about the email system we run then please contact us here for more information.

great content

are your Internet ecommerce plans ready?

So next week the kids are back at school and we all say goodbye to summer, hello Autumn, while at the same time longing for summer to stay as long as possible.

What possibly does this have to do with your Internet business you may ask? Well now is a great time to put plans in place as to how your web business will work and function in the coming months, indeed you really should have already done this. If not some things you defiantly need to consider are the following;

Autumn offers and promotions – possibly the most important thing your internet business can do is have a plan in place as to when to offer and promote certain products at certain times.  So look at the calendar and what is happening in your market place, maybe special events like Halloween (Oct 31st) or maybe country specific Thanksgiving (Nov 22nd).  When you have found them tailor your offering accordingly, this may just mean you send a ‘fright’ email on the 31st October – either way think outside the box!

Email marketing – are your email lists uptodate, do you segment data so someone who likes product A and not B will only get info on product A? Does your email marketing system offer you a fully functioning solution and include the such things as downloadable PDF reports, who clicked what link, a to b split testing and custom integration? If not it may be time to look elsewhere, we offer an email system you can read more here.

Marketing Plan in place for Christmas – this is THE most important event happening if you sell online before the end of the year, so you need to ensure you have your plan in place as to how you promote, pack and then ship all sales you make.  So think about large items, or time related articles, e.g. if you sell Christmas cards the market for these probably ends early December.  Also if you are shipping overseas when are the latest dates as this should effect what dates that you can offer guaranteed delivery upto.

Anybody who orders and doesn’t get the item for Christmas will not be happy, so bear that in mind.

Finally when all this is done, learn from your success and failures so next year you can be better prepared and ready earlier.

eMail Marketing top tips

It’s no secret that email marketing needs to be an intrinsic part of any online marketing strategy, GleaveMedia operate a very cost effective email marketing system called mailPDQ a full service email marketing platform with many advanced features already built in.

So when you have a great email marketing system how do you make best use of it, what are some of our top tips?

1.  Understand your readers – if you can categorise your data, or segment it so for example; you only send widget sales information to those interested in widgets you should get a far higher response rate.

2.  Personalise and clear subject lines – use the recipients first name (this comes back to point 1 – good data) and make the subject line clear and easy to understand, for example if you want the sendee to like your Facebook page then say it!

3.  Plain text as well as html – these days not everyone’s email client can/will accept all those great images, so offer a choice.

4.  unsubscribe link – not only is this a legal requirement its plain polite.

5.  get to the point – what is the email you are sending about and what do you want the use to do with it when they open it?

6.  dont waffle – see point 5!

7.  Be Consistent – if you say you are going to an email monthly or maybe weekly then make sure you do this, nothing is worse than over promising and under delivering.

8.  Be Creative – this is a great opportunity to really show the recipient something great about you/your business – so use it!

9.  Remember the aim is to get the reader to carry out an action – if you want the sendee to click, add the ability to click, if you want them to phone you add the phone number a few times….

Follow these 9 points above and we dont think you’ll go far wrong.
