Search Engine Optimization Exeter

How long do SEO results take to show?

Often for a new client the conversation quickly moves onto when they will appear on the first page of Google, a very difficult question to answer and one we use to raise a number of really important points about Search Engine Optimisation and the service we provide, here are a few headlines we usually run through;

You need to give any SEO time

There are over 354 million websites on the internet today and whenever a new website is added to the web it is uploaded to what is called a web server. The site will then sit and wait for a search engine such as Google or Bing to find it on the server it sits and then index it. We use the analogy of the Internet as a library and your site being a new book on a shelf in that library. So when your site is found by a search engine it will then go through as much of your site as it can indexing all your information so it can then place your site, on one of the pages of the internet. With more than 25 million sites being added a year, it does take a while until the search engine is even able to find your site. A client shouldn’t be worried that when they type the site into search engine nothing comes up for a few weeks or months, so long as you (and us) are working on your search engine strategy when you are indexed it will be for the right phrases and strongly.

A lot of work goes into any SEO strategy

Website is built and live on the internet and your site is indexed, so that it isn’t it? Well no, we’ve only just started as building good SEO is part of an ongoing process that should be part of your online marketing strategy. Once you’ve been indexed by the likes of Bing and Google they won’t be back unless you give them reason to do so. Your site needs content that not only brings the search engine snack but also the user back to your website. So as part of your strategy what should you be monitoring and watching, well here are some to consider:

Visitors to your site, how many and what are they doing?

Surely the most important thing for your website is visitors , how many are you getting and from which sources are they coming from, how many pages are they looking at and how ling are they on the site for. If this number falls then we need to make changes, this is part of the ongoing service that Gleave Media provide, working with with clients to ensure they can/are listed on the first page of a search engine for the given key phrases of their business.

Keyphrases, you have heard of these right?

I am sure you will have heard of the phrase ‘Content is King’? In SEO this is even more important as great content not only attracts traffic to your site but also guides the user through it. THe content and key phrases used are what guides a search engine to your site, so make sure your content is rich with these keywords. Gleave Media use a number of tools to help determine what are great keywords for your business and to support this we offer all our clients ongoing monthly plans in which we track and report on all these results on a monthly basis making any updates and changes as necessary.

There is so much more to Search Engine Optimisation and this is just a taster of what we offer to help you understand the complex world of SEO. If you want to help guide your business and talk further about your online marketing strategy then please get in touch using our contact form.

    QR Codes for an Estate Agent

    QR Codes for an Estate Agent

    During our travels around the UK we come across lots of interesting uses of technology, perhaps the most catching of recent times has been the use of QR codes by estate agents.

    The estate agency business traditionally produces lots of property details nicely printed to hand out to prospective tenants. I would second guess that lots of these are simply wasted, ripped up, scribbled on or simply thrown away. So how does technology help this, well for this business the lettings listing are accessible by QR code, no printed media at all and they are shared on the window (as in the photo) and all printed media, newspaper adverts etc etc. Scan the QR code with your mobile and you get the latest letting listings, no printing and 100% up-to-date AND you can then embed calls to action, enquiry forms etc making a seamless enquiry portal.

    This is very much a ‘win win’ for the business and the consumer;

    Save costs – cutting down dramatically on printed media

    Environmental benefits – far less paper is used/wasted

    Embrace consumer demand – the listing is delivered to the consumers mobile, is always fully up-to-date

    Differentiates you from your competitors – yes are your competitors churning out the endless lists and when a potential client contacts them, go ‘sorry that one has gone’ etc etc

    Smarter way of working – embracing new technology and changing working practices for the better has to be a good thing doesnt it?

    So if your business needs a different look on its Online Marketing why not give us a try, we have numerous satisfied customers and love working with proactive businesses, please get in touch here.

    Groupon_4C_without_tagline

    Groupon Vouchers are they good or bad for business?

    Daily Deals from Groupon we love it, every day you get an email promoting that deal of the day as well as a few others that ‘may’ be of interest to you, these are from local businesses in your area and generally have huge savings of 50%+.

    So popular is Groupon that is has been floated on the stock exchange and is worth around $10 billion,  it literally is THAT popular.

    The principal idea behind the site is that Groupon delivers lots of new customer to local businesses, in return the local business offers a substantial discount to Groupon subscribers.  Everyone is a winner, the business gets lots of new customers, the customers get a great discount and Groupon takes a % of the sale.

    If you are thinking of moving your business offers onto Groupon beware as there’s an issue with this type of customer and that is to do with the quality of the customer the local business gets.  The deal is so great that the customer is just buying the price NOT the service, for example an Oven clean that normally is £99 on Groupon is £29 a massive saving, but how likely are you to return to that business and pay full price next time?

    Just this week a massive ‘issue’ has been highlighted when this Bakers offers were too successful – read the article from the Daily Mail here.

    Also something that is often overlooked is the upsell potential, a week or so ago the national Groupon was Premier League tickets to Fulham vs Bolton for just £15 (684 people purchased this) all the add ons that go with football, program, burger, coffee etc will all be at full price AND Fulham will have the data to market future offers to

    So does your business have the opportunity to upsell or add value offer everything at ridiculously cheap prices…and you get ridiculously cheap customers.

    Think about that the next time you want to go ‘as cheap as possible’!

    Who will ONLY buy if you offer the absolute lowest price.

    great content

    are your Internet ecommerce plans ready?

    So next week the kids are back at school and we all say goodbye to summer, hello Autumn, while at the same time longing for summer to stay as long as possible.

    What possibly does this have to do with your Internet business you may ask? Well now is a great time to put plans in place as to how your web business will work and function in the coming months, indeed you really should have already done this. If not some things you defiantly need to consider are the following;

    Autumn offers and promotions – possibly the most important thing your internet business can do is have a plan in place as to when to offer and promote certain products at certain times.  So look at the calendar and what is happening in your market place, maybe special events like Halloween (Oct 31st) or maybe country specific Thanksgiving (Nov 22nd).  When you have found them tailor your offering accordingly, this may just mean you send a ‘fright’ email on the 31st October – either way think outside the box!

    Email marketing – are your email lists uptodate, do you segment data so someone who likes product A and not B will only get info on product A? Does your email marketing system offer you a fully functioning solution and include the such things as downloadable PDF reports, who clicked what link, a to b split testing and custom integration? If not it may be time to look elsewhere, we offer an email system you can read more here.

    Marketing Plan in place for Christmas – this is THE most important event happening if you sell online before the end of the year, so you need to ensure you have your plan in place as to how you promote, pack and then ship all sales you make.  So think about large items, or time related articles, e.g. if you sell Christmas cards the market for these probably ends early December.  Also if you are shipping overseas when are the latest dates as this should effect what dates that you can offer guaranteed delivery upto.

    Anybody who orders and doesn’t get the item for Christmas will not be happy, so bear that in mind.

    Finally when all this is done, learn from your success and failures so next year you can be better prepared and ready earlier.

    If your business needs advice from a team that has been in and around the internet since 1999 why get in touch through our contact form here we’d be happy to help.

    betfair_qr

    What is a QR code and how would my business benefit?

    I talk a lot about Social Media both on this blog and to customers in general.  In fact one of the key strengths of this business is using our considerable experience in including an element of Social Media into a customers Inbound Marketing Strategy, and seeing that drive traffic to the customer website solutions.

    However in a recent meeting, I was asked very simple question which I thought would be perfect for our blog hence this post.

    That questions was; what is a QR code and how could I use one to promote what my business offers?

    First lets start with what a QR Code Looks Like

    So a QR code like the one on the ladies bums above (you did see it didn’t you?)  is an acronym for quick response code and is actually quite old.  I believe starting in Japan in the mid 90’s.  Now the technology is really taking off some 15 years later as mobile technology has caught up.

    If you have a smart phone with a camera and a simple app once the QR code is scanned this can take a user to a web page, a video perhaps or even a call – it really is that flexible.

    What a QR Code Can Be Used For

    QR codes can be used in so many different ways, many household names are using these codes for adverts or specials inside the stores, the codes are even being seen embed on billboards and press adverts – all to send smart phones users to a link containing more info on a product or service.

    If you are a business that why not use a QR code in your shop window to send users to a web page containing hours of business, a menu and even reviews on the business. Maybe print one on the reverse of a customers receipt to ask them to review their purchase or LIKE your facebook page.

    A QR example from Betfair and the British Beach Volleyball Team

    Check out the photo of the two beach volley ball players, a QR code will be printed on the back of the sportswomen’s bikini bottoms that will direct users to a Betfair website when photographed on a smartphone.

    How do I Scan a QR Code?

    Firstly you need a smartphone, then when you see  a QR code somewhere and you want to scan it and see what’s offered? Well firstly you need an app which you can get from Android, the App Store or Ovi store; then you open the app and hold your camera at the QR code and off you go, the app does the rest…

    So have you got any examples of QR codes, will you be scanning the ladies bums in the London 2012 Olympics?
