What your online business can learn from the High Street

Tablet ComputerIt seems that these days pretty much any business can (and does) sell online after all it isnt that difficult and can be fairly straight forward the key is actually getting sales through the new online sales tool and this requires a real focussed approach and a really key understanding of the markets you are targeting, so these are 3 keys points that the high street has simply failed to address as highlighted by the recent high profile failures of HMV and Jessops.

Customer Service needs to be amazing

If  want to look at simply amazing customer service you need look no further than Amazon who have led the way with their Customer First Attitude, at GleaveMedia we know from experience that they want you to be delighted, a parcel gets lost – no problem another will be sent, the product damaged – no problem send it back for a full refund.  A customer service attitude that puts ‘me’ the customer first is always going to be a winner.

On the high street a retailer that follows a similar philosophy is John Lewis that goes so far as to give (off its own back) a 2 year warranty and 90 days software support on all laptops – how is that for having faith in the products you sell?

Dont forget your Brand

Order from Harrods and sure your delivery doesnt come in a green Harrods branded truck, it does come in a Harrods branded box though – no shame in that arriving at your house is it?  This branding stands for something and even though you may never have been inside a Harrods store they still want you to have that Harrods experience.

On the high street Apple are a great example, when you buy an Apple computer the box is an integral part of the product – it identifies as to who you are and that as you walk down the high street back to your car it marks you out – an Apple user, spot the stares everyone knows what you have inside that box!

What is the latest trend?

Don’t fall into the we’ve always done it this way trap, having said that you don’t need to lead from the front and don’t forget that previous massively strong retailers like HMV lost their way and have perished in this ultra competitive world through not seeing how the market has changed.  HMV in particular didn’t significantly promote gadgets or new technology, just seemingly wanting to stick to DVD’s and CD’s. The end of the typewriter should be a clear example to any growing business, there is nothing wrong with a typewriter, technology simply moved on – even though the BBC still gives us 5 reasons to still use one, we refrain!

Five top tips for engaging your facebook fans

thistle_exeterFollowing the recent facebook marketing seminar at Exeter Rugby Club we thought that it would be good to share our five top tips for engaging your facebook fans.

Firstly with over 1 billion users and growing your business has a massive marketing opportunity on Facebook, one that numerous companies are taking full advantage of.  Being on facebook is not enough though, you need to be using it effectively and making time to curate your community.  So the question is how? well here are our five top tips for engaging your facebook fans;

1. Be YOU

Social Media is incredibly transparent so dont try to be something you aren’t as you will be found out. By all means be professional, be funny let your personality and the personality of the business come through in updates you make and if posting updates is someone in your offices job then tell your audience that – dont hide, Becky from XYZ Parts sounds loads better then XYZ Parts dont you think?

2. Try to include images where possible

An images tells a thousand words so the quote goes, so wherever possible include an image in any updates and make sure its relevant to the update, from our research image based updates do gain a better response rate and surely this is what any business is after.

3. Keep getting LIKES

Once you have built your acceptable level of LIKEs to your facebook page, dont stop, keep going (while you’re at it hop over to Facebook.com/gleavemedia and LIKE our page) import email lists and ask for LIKES, include your facebook link in any email outs and your email signature, give people a reason to LIKE you as people who know your business are far more likely to engage with you.

4. Post compelling content

This surely is a no brannier, post content that is genuinely interesting and your users will want to engage with, be fun even linking to topical and funny videos – remember Peter Kay talking about Biscuits, how is your office coffee?

5. DONT SELL

Their is nothing worse than visiting a facebook page that just wants to sell sell sell, this is an instant turn off if it helps do you remember the safe style TV advert? DONT DO THIS!

Your facebook page needs to be about engagement nobody likes to be sold at constantly, is this all you do?

Social Media Training for the Institute of Fundraising

Institute of Fundraising South West ConferenceOur last event of 2012 was speaking at the South West Institute of Fundraising Conference held at Exeter Chiefs Stadium, Sandy Park on the outskirts of Exeter.

This all day conference  featured numerous high quality sessions include case studies of best practice from local charities through to nationally recognised speakers such as Amanda Pearson from Alzheimers Society on Legacies and Jhumar Johnson from Kingston Smith on the secrets Major Donor Fundraising.

Our well attended session was on Facebook from flop to fantastic, it was a lively session with lots of charity fundraisers who we batted the topic of facebook back and forth to see how it worked best in their organisation, sharing best practices and top tips to build and manage an awesome facebook page – surely a must for everyone, not just charitable organisations?

Target your Pay Per Click advertising

One of the key elements of any Pay Per Click campaign is to define who you audience for this actually is.  If you can discover who your target audience is this can often not just help your Pay Per Click campaign but also other marketing campaigns across your business.

So how do you do this, well why not ask yourself 5 simple questions

  • Who am I targeting with this campaign?
  • Where do my ideal customers live?
  • Why does my target audience need this product or service?

Now it may well be that they deliver nationally, but how likely is a user to click on that and if they do and discover that you don’t deliver nationally then your Pay Per Click budget is being needlessly wasted by not following the really simple steps to getting it right?

Facebook training for Charities in Plymouth

Social Media Seminar for Charities in PlymouthAt the end of September we had another of our Social Media Seminars aimed just for Charities, this one in Plymouth entitled ‘Facebook from flop to fantastic’.  We had around 30 charities from across the South West who learnt how to make better use of Facebook for their charity.  Using case-studies, campaigns and a warts ‘n’ all expose of this popular SocMed tool, we were able to guide them through the steps of using Facebook to engage and promote their charity.

As with all our training seminars, interaction and participation are always encouraged and we welcomed charities large and small who wanted to learn how to make better use of these new media technologies in a fun and challenging way.

We also very pleased to have Santander talking about the Santander Foundation which  funds local, regional and national charities for their work within the UK. They are committed to helping disadvantaged people through their two charitable priorities. Formerly the Abbey Charitable Trust, the Foundation was set up in 1990 and has given more than £36 million to charities in the UK. In 2012 the Foundation will be increasing its grants budget to £4.5 million.

With some great feedback and really positive results already for the charities, a very pleasing result all round!

Getting your ecommerce site ready for Christmas

As we head into the busiest quarter for most ecommerce sites, you as a site owner you need to ask yourself some really pertinent questions as there is simply no point in sending traffic to a less-than-optimised website or product listing. So before you do anything else then take a good look at your website and product listings and ask yourself the following question: Would I buy from this site?

You need to be hard and honest and this is where an experienced outside team can help, asking such things like;

is your design professional enough for your business image?

do your product pages look dated?

does the copy need updating, are you actually selling each and every product?

What about your photos, if they were taken on a mobile phone – this is not good enough these days.

Does your site have any additional costs that you aren’t honest and open about?

Do you have a significant drop off at checkout?

If the answer is yes to any of these direct questions your site will be loosing business, maybe more than you are actually winning so why not take the opportunity now to get your site working as it should.  Don’t forget these days this  can include simply collecting data on a brochure download or getting new likes on your Facebook page.

five ways to create amazing customer surveys

We are big believers in customer surveys as a great way of helping you determine which way your online business should proceed and these are are five ways to create amazing customer surveys.

1. Do your research

Any successful survey needs to be as targeted as possible. Don’t just ask your email list, “What products do you want to buy from us?” may not turn up as many good ideas as asking them about specific subjects.

So why not look at your webstats and see which are you best selling products or if you don’t sell online yet  your top content pages, if any are similar then why not use this as a starting point for your survey?

2. Draft your questions

This is controversial I know but we think for best results, try and make your survey no more than 10 questions.  Most of us have short attention spans and if you bombard your email list with lots and lots of questions you completion rates will fall considerably.  Also a Yes or No answer to your questions is great but it won’t give you as much information as a free text box, they will just take more time to collate – but do you want great research to act on?

3. Can you offer an incentive for completing the survey?

Why not come up with an incentive to encourage completion of your survey, this doesn’t have to be cash – Premier Inn for example offer a cash draw for x participants, others may offer an ebook – think different to get people to participate, you won’t regret it.

4. Make your survey work well online

Many web companies will tell you they can hand code you a survey that looks great and works amazingly, why bother just head over to SurveyMonkey or Google the phrase Online Surveys to see what best suits you, these automated surveys can do a lot of the hard work for you and some even offer a free survey solution to trial on…. You generally find the paid upgrades offer some great features like automated follow ups and a custom URL for your survey and stats on sending and the like so don’t be afraid to splash out the costs aren’t significant, on SurveyMonkey a paid plan starts at just £24 per month.

5. Ensure you publicize your survey to prospects, customers and your target audience

Once you have your survey all ready to go, make sure you then tell people about it, some location could be;

• Your business or personal website
• At the end of your news updates
• Included in email newsletters
• On your social media profiles

Don’t forget your target audience may not have time to complete the survey first time, so make sure you tell them once, then again and then again – you want to ensure it gets high completion rates so you have the best feedback to act on.
